Acupuncture Session Explained

What to Expect

If you are considering to use acupuncture or just curious about how it works, understanding what happens during a session can make the experience more comfortable.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of time-tested therapies from Chinese Medicine. It involves inserting disposible thin needles into selected points on your body to encourage healing, and relieve pain.

What Happens During an Acupuncture Session?

1. Initial Consultation

When you arrive, we will sit with you to discuss your health concerns and goals.

If it’s your first visit, the consultation may take longer as we gathers detailed information about your medical history. At Acupuncture Medicine South Melbourne, we offer a 90-minute first visit session while only charging the 60-minute rate, allowing more time to better understand your needs

2. Diagnosis and Plan

We may examine your tongue, palpate your pulse or abdomen, and assess areas of pain or tension. Depending on your condition, pulse palpation may not always be necessary, as it is specific to certain Chinese Medicine diagnoses.

After gathering the necessary information, we will outline today’s treatment strategy and explain what you can expect during the session.

3. The Treatment

Once you’re ready, you’ll sit or lie on a comfortable treatment chair or table. At Acupuncture Medicine South Melbourne, we will guide you through the process step by step, seek your permission to proceed, and explain what you might experience during the treatment.

  • Does it hurt?

Most people feel little to no pain during acupuncture. You might feel a pricking sensation when the needle is first inserted, but it’s more like a quick mosquito bite. It’s important to note that acupuncture needles are much less painful compared to western needles, which have hollow tips designed to cut into flesh. Instead, acupuncture needles have solid, round tips that glide through the skin with minimal discomfort.

Because everyone’s anatomy is different, you may occasionally experience an elevated sharp sensation at certain points. If this happens, please let us know immediately so we can adjust the needle to enhance your comfort. At Acupuncture Medicine South Melbourne, we believe that creating a relaxing and comfortable experience is essential for the overall effectiveness of the treatment.

  • Once the needles are in place, the sensation typically shifts to a dull, aching, or buzzing sensation that may come in waves. Depending on the tightness of your muscles, some areas might feel tighter or heavier than others. This deep, dull, and heavy sensation is what we aim to create for an effective acupuncture session, as it signals your body’s natural response to the treatment.

  • If you ever feel unsure or uncomfortable, communication is key—just let us know, and we’ll make adjustments to ensure you have a positive experience.
  • The needles stay in place for about 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your condition. During this time, you’ll rest quietly in a relaxing environment. Many patients feel deeply relaxed—some even fall asleep!

4. Additional Therapies (Optional)

Sometimes, acupuncture is combined with other techniques to enhance the treatment, such as:

  • Cupping: Suction cups placed on the skin to improve circulation and release tension.
  • Meridian Massage: A therapeutic massage technique that stimulates specific energy pathways to support healing.
  • Ear Acupuncture: Tiny needles or seeds placed on the ear to address specific health concerns.
  • Scalp Acupuncture: Needles placed on specific points of the scalp, often used for neurological and pain conditions.

Your practitioner will explain these options if they’re recommended for you.

5. Post-Treatment Care

After the session, your acupuncturist might share some advice, such as avoiding heavy meals, strenuous exercise, or exposure to cold wind right after treatment. Rest and hydration are key to maximizing the benefits.

It’s important to note that you may not experience the full potential of acupuncture treatment immediately. Some people feel better the same day, but for others, noticeable results may take a day or two. Healing is a gradual process, particularly for chronic conditions.

Communication Is Key

Effective communication between you and your acupuncturist is vital for the best results. Don’t hesitate to share details about how you’re feeling before, during, and after the session. A communicative acupuncturist who listens and adjusts treatments based on your feedback can significantly enhance your experience.

How Many Visits Will You Need?

Repeat visits may be necessary to achieve the best results, but this largely depends on your individual condition and health goals.

At Acupuncture Medicine South Melbourne, we see each patient as highly individual. To alleviate any financial burden, we do not pre-schedule appointments unless requested, but we do encourage return visits to ensure the best outcomes for your health.

Acute conditions may resolve in just a few sessions, while chronic or long-term issues may require ongoing treatment over several weeks. Your acupuncturist will guide you on what’s appropriate for your situation.
