What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a time tested and evidence based Chinese medicine (CM) discipline that has been used for thousands of years to alleviate various types of pain.

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into specific points on the body, where they are left in place for a period of time (needle retention). The goal of acupuncture is to restore balance to the flow of energy (Qi)  in the body, which can promote healing and alleviate symptoms.

According to CM, imbalances or blockages in the flow of Qi can cause physical, emotional, and mental health problems. Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body to redirect and restore the Qi  flow to alleviate symptoms such as pain, stress, anxiety, and depression.

From a scientific perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release natural pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins. It also helps reduce inflammation and stress, which can contribute to pain and discomfort.

Acupuncture has become increasingly popular in treating chronic pain conditions such as back pain, neck pain, arthritis, and migraines. It is also used to alleviate side effects of chemotherapy and improve fertility.

Research on the effectiveness of acupuncture has produced mixed results, with some studies showing clear benefits while others have found no difference between acupuncture and placebo treatments. However, many people report feeling significant pain relief and other benefits from acupuncture, and it is generally considered to be a safe and minimally invasive treatment option.

It is important to note that the effectiveness of acupuncture may vary from person to person, and it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if acupuncture is an appropriate treatment option for your specific type of pain.
